Well, it’s been a while since my last post… Not much new on the Alumni Relations front; another successful newsletter in progress (just waiting for the final copy), sent out about a bajillion invites to our chapter’s banquet this fall, and am trying to get a poker tourney set up before school starts… but as you may have guessed from the title, that’s not what this post is about…
I just returned from the 2007 Stead Leadership Seminar where they unveiled the True Brotherhood initiative (and if you haven’t yet, I would seriously recommend you going to the C&C article about True Brother and reading it… it’s cool stuff…) The big thing that I’m personally worried about is that I was the sole brother from my chapter to attend and while I’m ready to dive headfirst into True Brotherhood, I think my chapter will take quite a bit more persuading. First, I think that my passion for the fraternity as a whole and my overly anal ways will benefit me in that I honestly think I got as much out of the seminar as is humanly possible (having met most of the Grand High Zeta, numerous HQ staff members, and my upcoming ELC)… however, I may also have been the worst person from my chapter to send because due to my ever-increasing idealism, I’ve been that one brother who’s constantly the buzzkill mentioning things like “ideals” and “practice what you preach”… therefore, I’m afraid that when I go back, I’m going to be confronted with the same brick walls I’ve always been; a bunch of beer monkeys (and if you don’t know that term, ask somebody who went to the conference… Biff coined it, and it’ll be on urbandictionary.com by the time i leave my computer!) who think i’m preaching like usual and will squeek loud enough to drone out the message… Read the rest of this story »

Most of the writing on Lambda Chi Alpha celebrates the undergraduate institution. While this is logical, is it correct?
You also advised to write about CURRENT matters! Yet I wonder if the majority of members really have much CURRENT connection with our fraternity? And without an “occasional sojourn into the days of yore,” will any current connection ever develop?
Perhaps I am simply over-edcucated, in comparison to the average. But I read somewhere that today most college graduates wind up with at least two degrees. It seems to be that LAMBDA CHI ALPHA may be losing more than it is gainng by this total stress on undergraduate institutions and current fraternal events. In earlier posts here on “Voices” or responses to “C & C” articles, I’ve mentioned that I was High Phi during my undergrad years at Idaho (Epsilon-Gamma Zeta). I’ve confessed that our Ritual had a strong, positive impact upon yours truly; I cherish it.
Therefore, it shouldn’t surprise any Brother that I leap at opportunity to witness the Ritual again. Such occurred this past Friday night/Saturday morning, when the Sigma-Beta Zeta — our Brothers at St. Mary’s University — initiated four new Brothers. After a postponed start, the Ritual team did a terrific work! Read the rest of this story »

The tragedy of the terrible shootings at Virginia Tech has been on my mind & heart the past three days. It’s been on everyone’s heart, I believe, who has any connection with higher ed., as alumnus, current student or faculty or parent, etc.
My prayers are with our LCA brothers at Sigma-Lambda Zeta at Va. Tech. I hope that none of them was killed or injured, but surely some had beloved classmates who were. May Christ our Light bathe you in His comforting peace. Read the rest of this story »

Wow! Something very historic for Lambda Chi Alpha occurred last night in San Antonio! The three local Zetas plus the San Antonio Alumni Association put on a magnificent White Rose Gala, in the fairly new Skyroom at University of the Incarnate Word.
I’m so glad I was there! Lover of history that I am, I appreciate being involved in something of a historic or “first-time” nature. And lover of the Brotherhood that I am, I relish ANY activity that allows me as an alumnus to keep participating in the fraternity that meant SO MUCH to me as an undergraduate at the University of Idaho (Epsilon-Gamma Zeta).
