Why I am glad to be a Lambda Chi.

September 19th, 2007 by Art Hebbeler. Popularity: 44%.

OK, maybe it’s bad form to blog twice in a row, but my blood pressure is up, and it’s up because I am glad to be a Lambda Chi and a fraternity man, and I am ticked off at an email I received from a brother fraternity’s executive director this week.

Last month, one of our local IFC chapters was placed under suspension by the University of Maryland Baltimore County for three years for violation of several university standards, including underage drinking, sexual misconduct, providing alcohol at a recruitment event, prostitution at a recruitment event, and recruitment of academically-ineligible men. The chapter in question was found guilty of the charges by the university’s Hearing Board, and the decision was upheld by the university’s Appeals Board, and finally, the vice president of student affairs. Under the terms of the suspension, the chapter was to have no presence on campus, could not recruit new members, wear letters or pins, or otherwise be identified. The chapter was levied a monetary fine, and required, prior to being reinstated, to complete a program on alcohol abuse and acceptable rush and pledge practices. Read the rest of this story »

Adventures of a New High Pi — Changes Afoot

I didn’t realize how long it had been since I blogged here. My apologies to all for not keeping up with my commitment to blog at least twice a month. Then again, I see others aren’t blogging that much, either <grin>.

When last I posted here, I had submitted my resignation as High Pi at UMBC (Phi-Delta). Since then, my resignation was not accepted (thank you, Lynn), and I have been on the job with the undergraduates. It’s been an interesting few months. Read the rest of this story »

2007 Stead Leadership and True Brotherhood

August 2nd, 2007 by Jon Wood. Popularity: 16%.

Well, it’s been a while since my last post… Not much new on the Alumni Relations front; another successful newsletter in progress (just waiting for the final copy), sent out about a bajillion invites to our chapter’s banquet this fall, and am trying to get a poker tourney set up before school starts… but as you may have guessed from the title, that’s not what this post is about…

I just returned from the 2007 Stead Leadership Seminar where they unveiled the True Brotherhood initiative (and if you haven’t yet, I would seriously recommend you going to the C&C article about True Brother and reading it… it’s cool stuff…) The big thing that I’m personally worried about is that I was the sole brother from my chapter to attend and while I’m ready to dive headfirst into True Brotherhood, I think my chapter will take quite a bit more persuading. First, I think that my passion for the fraternity as a whole and my overly anal ways will benefit me in that I honestly think I got as much out of the seminar as is humanly possible (having met most of the Grand High Zeta, numerous HQ staff members, and my upcoming ELC)… however, I may also have been the worst person from my chapter to send because due to my ever-increasing idealism, I’ve been that one brother who’s constantly the buzzkill mentioning things like “ideals” and “practice what you preach”… therefore, I’m afraid that when I go back, I’m going to be confronted with the same brick walls I’ve always been; a bunch of beer monkeys (and if you don’t know that term, ask somebody who went to the conference… Biff coined it, and it’ll be on urbandictionary.com by the time i leave my computer!) who think i’m preaching like usual and will squeek loud enough to drone out the message… Read the rest of this story »

Is it all undergraduate?

May 3rd, 2007 by David L. Woods. Popularity: 12%.

Most of the writing on Lambda Chi Alpha celebrates the undergraduate institution. While this is logical, is it correct?

You also advised to write about CURRENT matters! Yet I wonder if the majority of members really have much CURRENT connection with our fraternity? And without an “occasional sojourn into the days of yore,” will any current connection ever develop?

Perhaps I am simply over-edcucated, in comparison to the average. But I read somewhere that today most college graduates wind up with at least two degrees. It seems to be that LAMBDA CHI ALPHA may be losing more than it is gainng by this total stress on undergraduate institutions and current fraternal events.
