“It’s the best job I ever had!”

October 6th, 2006 by Ed Leonard. Popularity: 7%.

Last Friday night I attended a former staff reunion in Indianapolis.  We were there to honor George W. Spasyk, who worked for Lambda Chi from 1950-1990.  George is a remarkable brother who was an even more remarkable leader, mentor, and friend.

What a wonderful evening!  Out of over 250,000 initiated members, only 348 have ever worked for Lambda Chi Alpha.  As I looked around the room, 40 had returned for the Friday evening dinner, with a few more returning for Saturday’s events.  What amazed me even more, after I did some quick math, is that those 40 brothers had worked cumulatively for Lambda Chi for 164 years!

I have always believed that what sets Lambda Chi apart from other fraternities is our commitment to chapter visitation.  Many fraternities visit chapters once a year, maybe.  Lambda Chi is committed to no less than two visits.  What also sets us apart is our consultants are the best trained.  That is obvious when the consultants meet their counterparts each fall at the mid-year field staff retreat.

Those of us who traveled gave much, but we also received much.

As many of us spoke about our time on staff, there was one recurring theme, whether a traveling secretary, or chapter consultant, or educational leadership consultant, “it’s the best job I ever had!”  I couldn’t agree more!!

    Brother Ed:

Whenever you post something at the Lambda Chi Alpha Website, you deeply touch me! Your words, especially in this particular blog, make it crystal clear that our Brotherhood is one of the dearest, most precious things in your life.

Oh, that I too could work for LCA! But an education degree in secondary school teaching of Spanish or history, an M.Div and an M.A. in Latin America Studies don’t make a sufficient educational background for fraternity work, I don’t think.

Well, MAYBE if LCA decides to plant zetas south of the border. . . .

Please know that I DO appreciate everything you’ve posted about our beloved fraternity! May the light of Christ SHINE BRIGHTLY upon you, and for many years!

P.S. Should you be traveling here to “deep in the heart of Texas” again, please let me know. I’d greatly enjoy chatting with you again, Brother!
