Annual Beach Retreat

September 15th, 2006 by Ed Leonard. Popularity: 5%.

Since August 1994, I have participated in an annual beach retreat to the beaches of either North or South Carolina.  Actually, the annual gathering started back in 1987 but moved to the beaches in 1994.  The participants have two things in common.  First, we are brothers.  Second, we work in higher education fundraising.  So the retreat is both a brotherhood retreat and a professional development retreat.  Over the years, this band of brothers have supported each other through job changes, divorce, marriage, children, retirement, etc.  It is an anchor for me in a hectic and busy life.  I know our conversations will be candid and probing.  We make each other think.  In the end, we support each other as brothers, unequivocally.

While this idea of brothers getting together annually is not new.  It is an idea that more should try.  This retreat reminds me each year that our brotherhood is not and should not be confined to our undergraduate student years.  Our brotherhood should span a life-time.
