Sharing our brotherhood

You never know when and with whom you will get to share our brotherhood.

This fall, Lambda Chi Alpha re-colonized at Sam Houston State University. A few weeks ago, the colony was formally installed and those founding associates are now the founding brothers. One of those new brothers - Kenny P. - is someone with whom I am very excited to share our brotherhood. Let me explain.

Kenny P. is the son of a brother who was in the chapter with me. We were on the swim team together and our brotherhood has grown over the last 30 years. Kenny’s father was House Corp Treasurer when I was House Corp President. Additionally, Kenny’s father was one of the groomsmen in my wedding and is my son’s godfather. Kenny was also at my wedding - he even out raced a brother and caught the garter from my wife. Kenny also was present at my son’s baptism.

When Kenny was 6, I was his swim coach.

Both father and son have been important to me in my life. I was very pleased to have the chance - albeit by cell phone - to congratulate Kenny on his initiation and to welcome him to our bond shortly after he was initiated. What a great feeling that was! Now he can call me Brother Ed instead of Uncle Ed. What a great moment!

I’m not sure I can wait 15 years until my son will be a freshman in college.
