Adventures of a New High Pi — Changes Afoot
September 15th, 2007 by Art Hebbeler. Popularity: 19%.I didn’t realize how long it had been since I blogged here. My apologies to all for not keeping up with my commitment to blog at least twice a month. Then again, I see others aren’t blogging that much, either <grin>.
When last I posted here, I had submitted my resignation as High Pi at UMBC (Phi-Delta). Since then, my resignation was not accepted (thank you, Lynn), and I have been on the job with the undergraduates. It’s been an interesting few months.
We were a pilot chapter for True Brother. This was an excellent opportunity for the chapter, and quite honestly, has made a huge difference in the chapter. Of course, a few graduations and “eight semesters and out” options have helped. An increase in visibility by dedicated alumni, and a renewed connection with our faculty advisor also have helped in bringing the chapter onto a straighter course.
Because of my #2 son’s wedding and the Baseball Hall of Fame induction of Cal Ripken, Jr, this summer, I was unable to attend the Stead Leadership Seminar. However, one alumnus and several actives did attend, and I think these men saw a side of Lambda Chi Alpha that they had not seen inside their own chapter. Of course, we “old heads” know that will happen, and that’s why we encourage (or should encourage) our undergraduates to attend as many of these events as possible. Our guys came back motivated and excited about the new year and the opportunities at hand. It makes my work a heck of a lot easier now than a year ago, to be sure.
We have an early ELC visit this year, and are receiving others from Indianapolis as well starting Sunday, which coincides with the chapter phase of IFC Rush (I still don’t understand UMBC’s way of doing these things, except to say that they obviously don’t work, but that’s for another blog). With some extra hands on deck, this should be a good fall rush, our second year of deferred rush for freshmen.
More to come…have a great Lambda Chi Weekend!
